Why do we get tired
After, or during, you work you tend to feel tired. If not, you might not work hard enough.
Because? Everyone knows the feeling
And? Everyone knows why you get tired
But… Not everyone knows exactly why
What a terrible situation! Indeed
And you’ll save the day how? By writing this blog.
Being tired is a bitch. Personally I don’t like being tired. Sleeping is the biggest waste of time there is. Luckily it’s not unpleasant. I’ve actually heard people saying it’s the thing they like to do most.
Anyway, the put on the had of Captain Obvious, every living thing gets tired, by exercise. Our body simply wears out and needs to rest in order to continue. The reason is that our muscles use oxygen, but when using a lot of energy, get less oxygen than required. That results in a lack of energy due to glycogen that’s being ‘converted’ into lactic acid, which then builds up in our muscles. Lactic acid reduces the ability of your muscles, causing fatigue. Get the Lactic acid out of your muscles and you might feel fit again.
There is a slight problem. Our body also produces lactic acid when doing mental work. Although it often seems people tend not to put in enough energy when challanging their mental skills it is enough to get tired. Also, our body is using quite some energy to simply get everything running.
It turns out that fatigue is not easy to compensate. Otherwise than to sleep that is. Sleeping repairs damaged cells and gets the lactic acid out of our muscles. Ergo, the tiredness gets less.
But, but… Why do eyelids get heavy when I feel tired? Simple. Eyelids stay open because of muscles and endure the same proces as the muscles that keep sus alive and get us around. When tired your eyelids tend to close. Something that you might notice after having a big meal too. Different cause though. You may feel tired after a big meal, because your body (and stomach in particular) is turning the crap you eat into energy, which ironically costs quite some energy too). So, you feel tired.
